| This update has just been emailed out from Consumer Affairs and is a timely reminder to update our rental providers of future regulations and deadlines. See information below regarding energy efficiency standards for rental properties. New energy efficiency standards Under new standards, rental properties will need to be more energy efficient. Compliance with the latest standards will start on 1 March 2027 to give rental providers time to adjust and comply. See the changes and timeframes below: From 1 March 2027 – when the existing appliances reach end of life: Heating and hot water. Rental providers must replace them with energy-efficient electric systems. From 1 March 2027 – at the start of a rental agreement or when switching to a periodic agreement: Cooling. Rental providers must install energy-efficient fixed cooling in the main living area. Ceiling insulation. Rental providers must install ceiling insulation with an R-value of 5.0 where none exists. Shower heads. Rental providers must install 4-star-rated shower head/s. From 1 July 2027 – at the start of a new rental agreement or when switching to a periodic agreement: Draughtproofing. Rental providers must draughtproof external doors, windows, and wall vents. From 1 July 2030 – all rental agreement types: Cooling. Rental providers must install energy-efficient fixed cooling in the main living area. Exemptions apply when meeting the standards is unreasonable. Refer to the regulations for details about what qualifies as unreasonable for each standard. Rental providers may be eligible for rebates via the Victorian Energy Upgrades Program. |
